Dental veneers: A boon to dentistry

Dental veneers

Dental veneers, a common term used in dentistry is nothing but a layer of material that is simply placed over your tooth either to make the teeth look more healthy and clean or to protect the surface of the tooth from damage. Usually two types of materials are used to prepare the dental veneers one of which is dental porcelain and the other one being composite porcelain.

A composite veneer can be directly placed over your tooth and it builds up automatically on the surface of the tooth or likewise, can be indirectly prepared by a dentist in a dental lab and then placed over the tooth of the patient. Usually a resin cement which is known as Panavia is used to fabricate the composite veneers. On the other hand, the porcelain veneer has only one way of being placed on the tooth and that is indirect way of veneer placement. First the porcelain veneer is fabricated in a dental lab and thereafter, placed over the tooth of the patient as and when required.

Dental veneers

Dental veneers are known to have been originated in the year 1928 by a Californian based dentist namely, Charles Pincus. And the sole purpose of the invention was to change the way an actor’s teeth appeared without being aware of the fact that this invention would benefit the people in the long run. The discoloured teeth, which have resulted from root canal or other drugs intake, worn down teeth, broken or chipped of parts of teeth, uneven and disoriented teeth, or the gaps in your teeth can be efficiently cured with the help of dental veneers. One disadvantage of dental veneers is that the procedure is not reversible plus it is a bit costly as well.

Porcelain veneers tend to be more durable when compared to the composite ones. They also excel is resisting stains. The light reflecting properties of healthy and shining teeth are also copied efficiently by the porcelain veneers. All in all, porcelain veneers are a better choice of dental veneers when the qualities of both the porcelain and the composite veneers are compared.

Today with modern techniques of fabrication and bonded cement, the dentist veneers usually last up to 10-30 years. Just in case they are chapped, discoloured, cracked etc, they can be changed frequently as and when required. The cost of getting a dental veneer varies based on which dentist you chose and the location you stay at. After getting the dental veneers, there is nothing special in terms of care that has to be done. Normal routine hygiene of the mouth and teeth is necessary.

Dental veneers are a boon to dentistry. They are a cure to many dental problems all of which would otherwise require even costlier and tedious dental procedures. All those who hide their smile due to discoloured or disoriented teeth need not be worried anymore because the dental veneers are there and will come to your aid and fix your teeth problem in no time.
