Morphine Addiction Treatment Options

Morphine is opioid analgesics widely used as strong painkillers. They are used for both short-lasting and chronic pain. Shortly after its advent in the eighties the use of the drug became popular in surgeries and relieving pain such as chronic headaches. Because morphine releases a neurotransmitter called dopamine it gives the body feelings of joy, relaxation and other positive emotions. Therefore the drug soon became an addiction for many especially war veterans of Civil War. This hedonic effect compels the body to crave for more drugs. Thus, gradually making the body physically dependent. Therefore, not using the morphine drug as directed by the physician and overdosing the drug can make a person addict. Other than prescription morphine, the drug is also being used illegally around the world by billions of drugs abusers.

Treatment for Morphine Addicts

Thousands and thousands of deaths are reported each year due to opioid addiction that includes not only men but women as well as teenage boys and girls. The crisis has led various countries to take initiatives in treating morphine addicts and restricting the use of opioids.

Rehabilitation Centers

One way to get rid of morphine addiction is by joining a medicated maintenance program. Such programs offer detox treatments to minimize the withdrawal symptoms and also reduce the chances of relapse through therapeutic treatment. A number of addicts who want to overcome this addiction and family members of many addicts opt for rehabilitation centers for various reasons. There are two types of rehabilitation centers one is ‘inpatient rehabilitation center’ and other is ‘outpatient rehabilitation center’. Inpatient rehabilitation centers provide residential options that are less hospital-like. Whereas, outpatient rehabilitation centers offer programs that vary from days to week with different attending time.

Some of the reasons that why rehabilitation centers are a better option for addiction treatment are mentioned below

  • Inpatient rehab centers reach to the root cause of addiction of every individual person
  • Through inpatient diagnoses and care rebuilds the self-confidence
  • Focuses to reunite with friends and family hence takes out the person from isolation.
  • The ambiance, nature, and greenery, reconnects them to life and gives a better experience.
  • With other addiction sufferers, patients connect, feel relatable and therefore move towards faster recovery through optimistic behaviour.
  • Minimum relapse has been reported in patients treated through rehabs.
  • Rehabilitation centers patients encounter less law offense experiences.
  • Outpatients rehab programs are also beneficial in this regard providing short programs to attend and move immediately within people.

Morphine Agonists

Another treatment option is using morphine agonists like methadone, suboxone, andsubutex under the proper supervision of the physician. Methadone is an opioid itself but less potent and is widely used in the treatment of heroin and morphine addiction. Some reports suggest that methadone treatment success rate is in between 60 to 90 if the treatment is carried for long-term. Treatment is carried out by giving a controlled dose of the agonist on daily basis. Other than methadone similar to methadone suboxone and subutex are also used starting from a dose of 8 mg.

Treatments for morphine addiction vary from person to person and the addiction level. Where some recover only through medication other require rehabs.
